Summary
After serving several positions in the Egyptian Embassy, Ahmet Esmat Abdul Meguid (Egypt, 1923 – 2013) started working as a Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of the European Office of the United Nations, Geneva in 1957 and worked as the Minister Counsellor of the Egyptian Embassy in Paris in 1963. He was appointed as Ambassador to France in 1969 and became the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs from 1970 to 1972. Mr. Abdul Meguid became the head Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1972 to 1983 and was the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1984 to 1991. He was the Deputy Prime Minister from 1985 to 1991 before becoming the Secretary‑General of the League of Arab States in 1991. Mr. Abdul Meguid was still holding the post as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States when this interview was conducted on 03 October 1997. Here, he discusses the events and background that led up to the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, paying special attention to the relationships within Middle-Eastern countries and with the major Powers. Mr. Abdul Meguid evaluates the role the United Nations has played in peace negotiations and their implementations.
