Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia, and Nyasaland were united in 1953 to form the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland; the Federation was dissolved in Dec. 1963. On July 6, 1964, Nyasaland was granted independence and name changed to Malawi; on Oct. 24, 1964, Northern Rhodesia was granted independence and name changed to Zambia. Following the change of name of Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia adopted the name Rhodesia and, on April 18, 1980, the name Zimbabwe (text from LC name auth.)
