摘要
Ahmad Fawzi (Egypt, 1948 – ) had been an accomplished journalist before he began his career at the United Nations. In 1989, he was Reuters Television Bureau Chief for the Middle East and also served as Regional News Manager for Eastern Europe. From 1991 to 1992, he was the News Operations Manager for the Americas for Visnews. In 1992, Mr. Fawzi was appointed as Deputy Spokesman for United Nations Secretary‑General Boutros‑Ghali. He was the Director of the United Nations Information Centre in London from 1997 to 2003, during which he also served on special assignments as the Spokesman for the Secretary General's Special Representatives on Afghanistan, Lakhdar Brahimi, and for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Mr. Fawzi accompanied Mr. Brahimi as his Spokesman on his missions to Iraq in 2004. Thereafter, he was Director of the News and Media Division in the United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI), a position he held until his retirement in 2010. Conducted while Mr. Fawzi was serving as Director of the News and Media Division, his interview is divided into two parts. The first part, given on 23 September 2005, focuses on the structure and role of the Department of Public Information, his role as Deputy Spokesman to Secretary‑General Boutros‑Ghali and the trip Secretary‑General Kofi Annan took to Baghdad in 1998. The second part, conducted on 4 October 2005, centred on Mr. Fawzi's experiences in East Timor serving as Mr. de Mello's Media Advisor and when he attended the Bonn Talks in 2001.
