Mr. Adriaan Verheul (Netherlands, 1957 – ) began his career with the United Nations Secretariat in 1990 as a human rights officer in Geneva. In 1992 he began to work with the human rights component of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). Mr. Verheul continued his work with the United Nations by serving in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the Headquarters in New York from 1993 to 2003. After working at the World Bank, overseeing demobilization and reintegration programmes for ex-combatants and soldiers in Central Africa from 2003 to 2005, Mr. Verheul returned to the United Nations as a senior official with the United Nations Mission in Sudan. This interview, conducted on 2 July 1998, focused on UNTAC and the role played by Mr. Verheul in Cambodia. He shared his experiences and perspectives on various subjects related to post-conflict peace-building and protection of human rights, from personal safety to the goal of teaching and implementing human rights in a war torn country.
