Mr. Elliot Richardson (United States of America, 1920 – 1999) was appointed by Secretary-General Pérez de Cuéllar to serve as the Special Representative of the United Nations during the 1990 Nicaraguan elections. Mr. Richardson's previous experience includes serving as a lawyer in the cabinet of Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. He was famous for resigning from his post as United States Attorney General rather than refuse President Nixon's order to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox during the Watergate Scandal of the early 1970s. From 1976 to 1977, Mr. Richardson served as US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Then, from 1977 to 1980, he served as Ambassador at Large and Special Representative of President Jimmy Carter for the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and head of the United States Delegation to the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea. At the time of this interview, 7 October 1997, Mr. Richardson was serving as an attorney for a software company. He spoke about his experiences in Nicaragua during the historic 1990 elections which ended Sandinista rule.
